Unboxing the beauty

The LG Optimus 3D is pretty and so is the box. Sporting bright red hues, the Optimus 3D box screamed out to be opened like a box of chocolates! At 128 mm (5 inches) long and 68 mm (2.67 inches) and 11.9 mm thick, it is not exactly the most pocket-friendly phone but, hey, who’s complaining; the 4.3″ 3D screen overwhelms with sexyness! Weight wise, at 6 ounces, I find it about the same as my current mobile phone, the Samsung Omnia 7 Windows Phone.

The device has a streamlined look; with a solid feel all around it. Above the 4.3″ screen is the silver LG logo, the 1.3 megapixel front facing camera and the earpiece. At the bottom, there are 4 white-led backlit touch-sensitive Android buttons.

At the top, you get your standard 3.5 mm socket to be used with the supplied earphones. To it’s right, there is the standby/on/off button.

As soon as you turn the Optimus 3D over, you will discover that there is a pair of stereoscopic 3D, 5 megapixels cameras mounted; with an LED flash in between them. The flash only works when shooting 2D mode, I guess shooting with flashes in 3D mode is unpredictable. The brushed, stainless steel look with the word ’3D Stereoscopic’ at the back also adds to the cool factor of this phone. The loudspeaker is also situated at the back and deliver decent, clear sound.

The LG Optimus 3D has curved edges and round corners. It seems like all smartphones follow this ‘template’ nowadays. To open the back panel to access the inert, one needs to pick the back shell with a fingernail and lift it; with remarkable ease. Inside, you’ll find slots for the SIM card and microSD. These can be easily removed without disturbing the 1500 mAh battery.

On the right side of the device, you find the volume rocker and further near the bottom, there is a dedicated 2D/3D button. This button switches between 2D and 3D modes and vice versa whether you are shooting, viewing a photo or video or even playing a game! This is really convenient! Pressing and holding this button brings you to the gorgeous LG 3D Space home screen where you can select different 3D services and apps.

On the left side, you’ll see 2 sockets that are protected from dust by plastic covers. You have a micro-USB socket and a micro-HDMI socket. With a HDMI cable, you can connect the LG Optimus 3D directly to a large screen TV with a HDMI input. Bonus: 3D content from the device works directly with the 3D TV. And with LG passive polarizing TV, the effect has be seen to be believed! How I know? Because a bunch of us were invited to the concept LG store in Marina Bay Sands (Singapore) for the demo!

3D Space Home Screen

Look mom, No glasses!

If you are into 3D content, you are in for a treat! And without those goofy glasses!

I was thinking, James Cameron probably spent millions custom-rigging 3D cameras to film Avatar and now, I have a 3D content creation tool that fits on my palm! How cool is that?

I took some footage with the Optimus 3D and am very pleased with the results so far; although you need to plan ahead with shooting 3D because some scenes renders itself better to 3D than others. Here are some 3D footage that I took with the Optimus 3D uploaded to youtube 3D channel. (You need the cyan/red glasses to view 3D on a non-3D monitor)

3D Image of plants

The LG Optimus 3D creates JPS files after taking 3D photos. You can open and view these files using a 3D JPS viewer such as Free JPS Viewer

3D Image of plants (anaglyph B/R g;asses needed)

On the Optimus 3D screen, you do not need glasses to view 3D but do need to keep you head steady (no raving). The 3D effect is stunning! You just got to see it to experience it! If you are interested to find out how this type of 3D technology works, click autostereoscopy here.

And you know what? You can upload your 3D video directly to youtube directly using the phone via 3G or Wifi!

Performance

Speed!

Not all dual-cores are the same! The engine in LG Optimus 3D is the OMAP 4430 from Texas Instruments (1 GHZ dual-core ARM A9 SOC chip) and coupled with a PowerVR SGX540 GPU ad 8GB of onboard memory and 512 MB of dual-channel RAM.

What sets it aside from the rest is that not only it has a dual-core processor, it also has dual-channel and dual-memory. That means each core has access to its memory fast and separated, evidenced by speedy processing on web pages (with Flash support), apps and UI transitions. Although processing 3D (games and applications) takes slightly longer, it is still acceptable.

Software

Home Screen Apps Screen

Ships with Froyo 2.2.2 with the promise that 2.3 Gingerbread will be on the way. It does everything that is expected of an advanced Android phone with 6 schrollable home screens. Standard apps include the browser, music app, photo gallery, 3D games (explained below), calendar and more.

Golf Game

The bundled games include Asphalt6, Let’s Golf 2, Nova and Gulliver’s Travel, which is more of a 3d book than a game. LG has also partnered with Game Loft to allow you to download additional 3D games such as Spiderman: Total Mayhem 3D, Assasin’s Creed: Altair’s Chronicles 3D and many others for FREE!

Juice Guzzler

The one thing I have gripe on is it’s endurance; or lack of it. With normal usage (checking SMS, playing a bit of games, photos), it usually gave up after 10 to 12 hours. That means I have to charge the device everyday or twice a day! With 3D mode, it drops even further! Considering the fact that 3D is the signature feature and I intend to use it majorly as a 3D content creator, this is such a let-down. I’ll find myself lugging around an external USB charger if I ever need to create 3D content outdoors.

Conclusion

I must say, the WOW factor and the dis-believing look of my friends when staring into a glass-free 3D screen is hard to resist! With a dual-core, dual-channel, dual-memory engine that zips thru apps and webpages as fast as an PC, it is a real delight using it. But alas, like many good and wonderful things, it doesn’t last long;  battery life sucks! It is like using 92 petrol on a Ferrari; you are not getting any leverage out of it. If the price is right and the battery life improves, I would not think twice getting it. Why? Because I can’t wait to be the next James Cameron :-)
